Dwarf Fortress, or "Slaves to Armok: God of Blood. Chapter Two: Dwarf Fortress" if you prefer the full name, is a single-player fantasy/strategy game for Windows. It doesn't have fancy graphics, instead it just has ascii maps, like Nethack. If you have no idea what I mean by that, just go to the website and check out the screenshots.
When you start the game for the first time, a 197376 by 197376 squares world will be generated (can take 15 minutes or so), and as far as I've understood things that is the map you'll be playing on after that (unless you presumably somehow force a new generated map). So if you've played a game and died, when you start a new game the world will pick up where you left off and you might for instance meet adversaries from previous games. There are two game modes, one where you build up a nice dwarven settlement, and one where you run around on your own.
I've read enough people rave about how good it is to post here. Personally I never really got into it, but then again I just spent a few minutes trying it out, so maybe I'm missing out.

It takes a while to be able to see the game and not ascii characters, but it's worth it. The latest version has just (last 24 hours) been released and still has one or two bugs so if something seems weird ask for help! ![]()
Ah, a working link helps, of course. Thanks for pointing it out. ![]()
Perhaps I should give it another go. There's got to be some reason people keep writing about it.
Looks like a cross between Angband (or Nethack if you prefer) and Civ, could be amusing. Reminds me of Stars! in a roundabout way, never did have much luck getting people to play that.
Frog attack!Someone's made a package that replaces the ascii characters with graphics here.
This game is brilliant, I am really enjoying it (despite it ruining the last week of my holiday). It feels like a much, much more advanced version of Dungeon Keeper with elements of the Caesar/Pharaoh/Emperor series.
My current "that is so cool" feature is the way you can redirect brooks and streams to create piping around the fortress. I've just worked out how to use floodgates and as soon as I come up with a good way to drain the various sections of my pipe-corridor network, my fortress will have plumbing and a cave farm. It's very satisfying getting the point where my dwarves have a functional well next to their dining hall, deep in the mountain ![]()
That's strange, it reminds me of The Sims more than anything else. But with blood and spikes.
You can export bmps and compress them to upload here: http://mkv25.net/dfma/
There's some really impressive ones there.
